Personal details
Born in Athens, Greece in 1954.
Daughter of ex Prime Minister of Greece Konstantinos Mitsotakis and Marika Giannoukou.
Widow of Pavlos Bakoyannis, Greek Journalist, Scholar and a New Democracy MP who was assassinated by the terrorist group "17 November" in 1989.
Married to Isidoros Kouvelos since 1998.
Two children, Alexia (b.1976) and Kostas (b.1978), from her marriage to Pavlos Bakoyannis.

Dora Bakoyannis is a liberal politician with a deep-rooted faith in the European Idea. Her views have been widely published in the Greek and international media and she has participated as keynote speaker in a great number of conferences, academic fora and debates all over the world.

Professional career
1977: Employee in the department of Relations and Cooperation with the EEU in the Ministry of Coordination, following public examination.
Political career
November 1989: elected to the Greek Parliament for the first time winning the single Parliamentary seat for Euritania.
April 1990: re-elected representing the single Parliamentary seat for Euritania
October 1990: re-elected representing the single Parliamentary seat for Euritania
October 1990: Undersecretary of State in the New Democracy government.
December 1992: Minister of Culture in the New Democracy government.
1996: elected Member of Parliament with the New Democracy Party, coming first in votes in her Electoral Constituency of Athens.
2000: elected Member of Parliament with the New Democracy Party, coming first in votes in her Electoral Constituency of Athens.
October 2002: First woman Mayor in the history of Athens, elected by a landslide majority of 60,6%, the largest percentage ever for Mayor of the city. She prepared the Capital City to host the Olympic Games "ATHENS 2004".
February 2006: Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Karamanlis government of New Democracy. She became president of the OSCE and organised the "Corfu Summit".

2007: elected Member of Parliament with the New Democracy Party, coming first in votes in her Electoral Constituency of Athens.
2009: elected Member of Parliament with the New Democracy Party, coming first in votes in her Electoral Constituency of Athens.
November 2009: Candidate for the leadership of the New Democracy Party. Expelled from the party in May 2010.
November 2010: founded the liberal political party "Democratic Alliance".
May 2012: as the leader of "Democratic Alliance" she formed a coalition with New Democracy in order to support the structural reforms needed in the country. "Democratic Alliance" suspended its operation in June of the same year.
June 2012: headed New Democracy's State-list for the national elections. Reelected to the Greek Parliament.
October 2012: Head of Greece's delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
March 2013: appointed co-rapporteur for Russia by the PACE Monitoring Committee.
October 2013: unanimously elected vice-president of the EPP/ CD Group of the Council of Europe.
January 2014: unanimously elected to chair the Council of Europe's Committee of Political Affairs and Democracy, following a proposition of the EEP.

Distinctions/Awards
1992: International Leadership Award by the International Centre for Women.
1993: Awarded by the 14th International Symposium, Fontana di Roma for her valuable contribution to culture.
2003: Member of a group of 12 high-level independent personalities, invited by Romano Prodi to contribute proposals on the social character, cultural identity and economic future of the new Europe in a prestigious round-table Conference.
2003: Grand Commander of the Order of Makarios III, in Cyprus.
2004: Commander of Merit by the Polish Republic.
2004: Grand Cross of the Italian Republic.
2005: Voted World Mayor in the annual international competition organised by the London-based City Mayors Organisation, competing with 550 other Mayors from around the world.

2005: Commander of the Order of Merit of the Hungarian Republic.
2006: Grand Cross of the Royal Order by the Kingdom of Denmark.
2007: Grand Cross of the Jerusalem Patriarchate.
2007: Grand Decoration of Honour in Gold with Sash (Grosses Goldenes Ehrenzeichen am Bande) of the Republic of Austria.
2008: Emperor Maximilian Award, European Award for Regional Policy and Local Government by the province of Tyrol and the city of Innsbruck.
2008: Honorary Senator by the European Academy of Human and Political Sciences in Salzburg.
2008: Grand Cross of the Order of the Phoenix of the Hellenic Republic.
2009: First female Foreign Associate of the French Academy in Humanities and Political Sciences (Academie Francaise des Sciences Morales et Politiques).
2009: Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic (Ordine al Merito della Republica Italiana, Cavaliere di Gran Croce)
2010: National Order of Chivalry of the Legion of Honour of the French Republic (Ordre Nationale de Chevalier de la Legion d' Honneur).
2013: Emeritus Professor of the European Polytechnic University in Bulgaria, for her endeavors to Bulgaria's and southeastern Europe's path towards the European Union.
2013: OSCE medal for her contribution to the approach between NATO and Russia at the Corfu Summit during the Hellenic Presidency in 2009.
2013: Venizelos award, the highest honour of the Pancretan Association of America, New York.
